Das Egtved Shirt Projekt steht immer noch an.

Hatte ja schon vor über einem Jahr HIER geplant, das Oberteil der jungen Frau von Egtved nachzustricken, die vor ca. 3.300 Jahren in Jütland/Dänemark begraben wurde. Natürlich ist das Original gewebt und nicht gestrickt, deshalb Interpretation, statt Rekonstruktion.

Bisher blieb es bei den Plänen… Elizabeth Zimmerman hat den Schnitt in ihrem Bog Jacket umgesetzt, mir liegt mehr daran, die Optik zu rekonstruieren. Foto gefällig? Dänisches Nationalmuseeum, bis zur Mitte scrollen.

Als Material nehme ich die vor ca. 3 1/2 Jahren in Xanten beim Römerfest erstandene Wolle – spinnradgesponnen, wenn auch nicht von mir. Schafrasse? Keine Ahnung, aber aufgrund der Farbe wohl eher kein Merino. Bei der Lagerzeit im Stash zähl ich das unter Stash Reduzierung.

Bisher habe ich die Ã?rmel fast fertig:

Dass ich nicht einfach von einem Ã?rmel zum anderen quer stricke, hat seinen Grund – leider bei der Konstruktion was übersehen. Auch wenn´s im Original nicht so ist – ich hätte gerne einen leicht taillierten Schnitt (hey, das ist MEIN Pullover, da brauch ich mich an keine Anleitung, Original etc. halten).

Deswegen könnte ich jetzt:

a) die Ã?rmel wieder aufribbeln (will ich nicht) oder

b) den Schnitt komplizierter gestalten (darauf wirds wohl raus laufen).

The Egtved Shirt Project is still on…

It´s been well over a year that I had the idea of recreating the shirt from the grave of the young woman of Egtved (Jutland/Denmark), who was buried about 3.300 years ago.  Of course, the shirt was woven, not knitted, but I´m after the look of it. Elizabeth Zimmerman has used the pattern in her “Bog Jacket”, the look she creates is rather different, however. I bought the wool about three and a half years ago in Xanten, at a Roman Reenactment event. It´s been spun on a wheel, but not by me. I´ve no idea which sort of sheep it came from, but judging from the color I don´t think it´s merino. So, I get some stash busting as well

Up to now I reached the sleeves (photos above).

If anyone is wondering why I don´t simply knit from one sleeve to the other in one piece – the reason is, I blundered in creating the pattern. Knitting from sleeve to sleeve doesn´t allow for knitting a fitted waist. Even if the original hasn´t got one, this is my pattern, so I´m going to create one.

As far as I can see, there are two ways of getting around to that:

a) frogging the sleeves completely (and I don´t want to do that)

b) creating a more complicated solution (that´s what it´s going to be).

Kann ich nur wärmstens empfehlen – Zahlung mit paypal (fix und sicher, seit den letzten Datenskandalen leg ich noch mehr Wert drauf, dass meine Bankverbindung nicht an alle und jeden raus geht) und sehr schneller Versand (mit Status emails) per DHL (freundlich für Berufstätige).

Zurück zur Wolle. Egal wie die Farbwiedergabe Eures Monitors ist, ich zweifle, dass sie dieser Farbe gerecht wird. Zumindest meiner schafft es nicht ganz (und das, wo ich extra bei Tageslicht fotografiert habe). Die reale Farbe ist etwas kräftiger, irgendwo zwischen Gelb, dass sich nicht ganz entscheiden kann, ins Grün zu spielen.

No matter how true your monitor is to colors in general, I doubt it will be able to do justice to this one (mine in any case does not.) The real color is a rich yellow with just a hint of light green. I really like it

Dieser Pullover mit den Herzchen bei Knitty hat es mir angetan: Cheesy Love (scroll down for English text)

Nach diversen Modifikationen:

• türkis und creme-weiss statt schwarz und angehauchtes rose
• andere Rüsche am Ã?rmel – 3 li 3 re statt dem Gekruschel
• Saum und Ausschnitt mit Mausezähnchenrand statt Rüsche
• Grösse 48
• Shetland Wolle mit 22 M / 10 cm statt 20 M / 10 cm, 27 gr / Knäuel
• 16 Knäuel Jamieson & Smith Shetland Wool türkis
• 2 Knäuel Jamieson & Smith Shetland Wool creme-weiss
• Rest: vom weissen etwas mehr, 12 gr Türkis
• Gesamtgewicht: 415 gr / 14.8 oz = 1900 m / 2110 yards
• Tallienberechnung mit dem Waist Shaping Calculator – unglaublich, passt perfekt wie man sieht
• Was den Halsausschnitt angeht – ich weiss nicht mehr wie oft ich ihn angestrickt, aufgeribbelt und neu gestrickt habe. Letztendlich bin ich bei der simpelsten Lösung von allen gelandet, wie beim Saum.

Alles in allem bin ich mit dem Ergebnis total zufrieden

I just fell in Love with the Cheesy Love Sweater from Knitty.com. But, as usual, there were several modifications:

• colour change from black and ever so light pink to turquoise and cream white
• finished size: 48 inch bust
• purl 3, knit 3 ruffle instead of the much more ruffled original
• hem and collar just knitted instead of the ruffle
• Pure Shetland Wool in 22 st / 4 in instead of acrylic with 20 st / 4 in
• waist shaping was done with the Waist Shaping Calculator – it fits just perfect
• Total weight and yardage: 415 gr / 14.8 oz = 1900 m / 2110 yards

I don´t know how often I knitted, ripped out and re-knitted the collar. Each design just didn´t seemed right. The final solution is simplicity itself. Altogether I´m really very pleased with the finished thing

Heute sollte es ja von Köln nach Norddeich gehen – hierhin.

Aachen liegt nicht wirklich auf dem Weg von Köln nach Norddeich… Naja, Pläne überleben den Kontakt mit der Realität nicht immer… und der Plan wurde kurzfristig geändert zum Strickcafe nach Aachen.

Vor dieser Entscheidung hatten wir so ungefähr alles was schief gehen kann:

• Verschlafen
• Zug verpasst
• Zug verspätet
• Zug ausgefallen
• Zug vor Endstation zu Ende w/Baustelle und 2 x mehr umsteigen

Ob das Universum uns ein Zugsocking zum Abgewöhnen servieren wollte?! Kann ich mir eigentlich nicht vorstellen.

Immerhin habe ich auf diese Weise das Strickcafe Woll-Treffer in Achen endlich kennen gelernt. Sehr schöne Atmosphäre und super Kaffee! Verführerische Wolle gabs natürlich auch.

Aber ich war ganz brav – das neu gelernte Mantra “Ich habe genug Wolle, ich habe genug Wolle, ich habe…” hat doch tatsächlich Wirkung entfaltet. Keine Wolle gekauft, obwohl die Versuchung durch das Alpaca in dunklem Beerenrot hart war.

Aber so ganz ohne ging es doch nicht. Fotos von der Beute:

Today we wanted to go to the North Sea by train (about 500 km to the north from Cologne), just for fun, while knitting and talking – such meetings are known as Knit on the Train.

We ended up in Aachen / Aix-la-Chapelle (50 km to the west from Cologne).

Plans often don´t survive exposition to reality . So the plan was changed on short notice to go to Aachen to visit the Woll-Treffer Knitting Cafe and shop.

We had the full program:

• overslept (mea culpa)
• missed the train
• train late
• train cancelled
• train ended early because of roadworks

Makes one wonder if the Universe decided to test our commitment to Knitting on the Train Events.

Anyway, I learned a new mantra: “I´ve got enough wool, I´ve got enough wool, I´ve got…” You get it.

It worked. I was very well behaved and didn´t buy any yarn though severly tempted by the alpaca in the dark plum colorway. Just two glittery-girly crochet hooks as seen above

Etwas zu grünlich geraten, weil kein Blitz zur Hand. Eigentlich ein sehr intensives Türkis mit Cremeweiss in Shetland Wolle. Mehr Details später.
