Irgendwie kommen bestimmte Themen in meinem Leben periodisch wieder. Scheint, jetzt sind die Wikinger mal wieder dran. Islandwolle und Seife etc. und passend dazu diese Drachenknöpfe, die ich vor einiger Zeit im Knopfparadies gekauft habe. Gibts in Gold glänzend, wie diese hier:

Weitere Ausführungen (abgesehen von verschiedenen Durchmessern) sind Gold matt (sieht man das Motiv besser), Altkupfer und Altsilber mit geschwärztem Hintergrund – da kommt das Drachenmotiv besonders gut raus:

Somehow certain topics reappear periodically in my life. Seems, the Vikings have another go right now. Icelandic wool and soap and these Dragon Buttons I bought some time ago from Knopfparadies. They are available in Bright Gold (picture 1), Burnished Gold (no pic, but the motive gets a better contrast), Burnished Copper (no pic) and Antique Silver with blackened background (pic 2 and 3) which shows the Dragon motive especially well.

Sieht fast so aus, als ob der Hochsommer vorüber ist dieses Jahr – etwas früh, aber bitte, das Wetter macht dieses Jahr offenbar total was es will – Winter bis in den Mai, Hochsommer Anfang Juli, da passt Herbstanfang Anfang August durchaus ins Bild.

Also, der nächste Winter kommt bestimmt und passend dazu kam diese Woche mein Päckchen aus Island von ShopIcelandic an:

Sonntag abend bestellt und bezahlt, Donnerstag mittag hier, Paketlaufzeit Island / Deutschland somit 3,5 Tage. Ich bin beeindruckt, vor allem, da es “normale” Luftfracht war und kein Express.

Offenbar kam es unbeanstandet durch den Zoll – ob es da aufgerissen wurde, keine Ahnung, jedenfalls war die Noppenfolie unversehrt und der Inhalt auch.

Zusätzlich zur Bestellung lagen noch Garnproben der anderen Istex-Garne bei – damit sind die nächsten Einkäufe wohl klar.

Und was war nun drin? Zunächst 12 x 50 gr Island Lace Einband / Lodband. Das geht dann mit je 2 Faden zum Zwirnen übers Spinnrad und wird eine February Lady für mich.

100 gr Plötulopi Berry Heather zum ausgiebigen Angrabbeln und Probestricken – ungesponnene Wolle, aber merkwürdigerweise kann man tatsächlich damit stricken. Ich glaub, das Zeug muss ich in grösseren Mengen haben.

Und dann noch das – Hallgerdur Seife, nach einer Isländerin aus den Sagas aus dem 10. Jahrhundert – eine der schönsten Frauen ihrer Zeit (was auch auf den reichlichen Gebrauch von Wasser und ihrer hausgemachten Seife zurückgeführt wird. Sie wusch sich jeden Tag und badete ein mal pro Woche – soviel zum Thema “dreckige Heiden” ha!)  Eigentlich ist das ja der Sündenfall – in den letzten 20 Jahren habe ich ja immer sehr darauf geachtet, Seife nur aus reinem Pflanzenöl und wo irgend möglich in bio Qualität zu bekommen. Hauptbestandteil hier ist “tallow”. Talg. Ich nehme an, Schafstalg. Oh, na gut. So wie die Schafe in Island leben, kann ich wohl damit leben, möglichst alles von ihnen zu verwerten wenn sie schliesslich geschlachtet werden und nicht die Hälfte weg zu werfen. Und, grosse Überraschung, der Schaum dieser Seife ist wirklich überaus cremig. Scheint auch sehr gut für die Haut zu sein. Ist ja auch keine Industrieseife, da sollte das nicht so verwundern.

Looks like summer is over this year – a bit early, but whatever. The weather this year seems out of control anyway. Winter until May, high summer at the beginning of July, beginning of autumn at the start of August seems only fitting.

So, next winter will be coming and this week my parcel arrived from Iceland’ s ShopIcelandic. Ordered and paid on Sunday evening, arrived Thursday noon, total time from Iceland to Germany 3 1/2 days. I am impressed, especially as it was “normal” air freight, not express delivery.

Obviously it passed customs without difficulty. If it had been torn open there and then I don’t know but the plastic wrapping was untouched and so was the contents. As an extra, they put threads of every yarn Istex has to offer in the parcel. Oh my – seems to me it is clear where the next wool will come from.

And what was in there? For starters, 12 x 50 gr Iceland Lace Einband / Lodband. Will be twisted 2 ply on my spinning wheel and is earmarked for a February Lady for me. And 100 gr Plötulopi Berry Heather to cuddle and test-knit – unspun wool but you can knit with it nevertheless. Amazing. I think, I have to have more of this.

The last item – Hallgerdur soap, after an Icelandic Women from the sagas in the 10th century. She was rumoured to be one of the most beautiful women of her time. This was probably at least partially due to the lavish use of water and her homemade soap. She washed every day and bathed once a week (so much for “dirty heathens”, ha!). This soap is something of a fall of grace for me – in the last 20 years I have always made sure to only use  soap made from 100 % vegetable oils and from organic sources if possible. The main ingredient in this soap is tallow – I suppose sheep tallow. Oh my. Considering how sheep live in Iceland I suppose I can live with the fact to use everything from them when they are slaughtered eventually and not throw away half of the carcass.

The really big surprise was the lather, however. Can’t remember any soap which produced such a dense, creamy one. Seems to be very good for the skin as well. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised, it’ s not manufactured industrial style after all.

Edit 22.08.2010: Ordered something else and it also arrived within 3.5. days, really, I am impressed.

Es ist Sommer, es ist August, es ist warm, die grosse Hitzewelle scheint momentan vorbei zu sein und ich stricke. Ein Kleid.  Ausgerechnet. Aus Islandwolle. Dicke, warme Islandwolle.

Lett Lopi, um genau zu sein, die man hier (in Deutschland) bekommt oder  hier (direkt aus Island). Aber ich übernehme keine Verantwortung für diese  Links und ihre Folgen – da gibts noch viel mehr, Plötulopi (ungesponnene Wolle) und Einband/Lodband (isländisches Lace Garn)…

Zurück zum Kleid: Klukka, gefunden über Ravelry (wo sonst?!) und die Anleitung zusammen mit der Wolle erhalten.

Und hier kann man das angestrebte Resultat sehen. Meine Klukka wird allerdings unterhalb der Knie enden.

Also ob das noch nicht irre genug wäre, bin ich auch noch über diesen Wikinger-Langschiff-Pullover gestolpert: Viking Boat Sweater – dieser Pullover ist der absolute Wahnsinn. Glücklicherweise bin ich wohl nicht verrückt genug, den zu stricken… aber vielleicht eine Weste? Mit dem Schiffmotiv nur vorne und hinten in einfachem Fischgrätmuster… oder doch auch hinten? Und bei dem Muster ganz bestimmt nicht hin und zurück – also mit steek? Hilfä! Davor habe ich mich bisher ja immer gedrückt… Ach was. Man muss sich seinen Ängsten stellen! *Strick-Prioritätenliste neu sortier*

It’s summer, it’s August, it’s warm, the greatest wave of heat seems to be over for the moment and I am knitting. A dress. Of all things. Made of Icelandic wool. Thick, warm Icelandic wool.

Lett Lopi, to be specific, which you can get here (in Germany) or here (directly from Iceland). But be warned… they offer a lot more, such as Plötulopi (unspun wool) and Einband/Lodband (Icelandic lace yarn)… well, you’ve been warned and I won’t take any responsibility for anything resulting from that link.

Back to the dress pattern: Klukka, from Ravelry (where else?!), bought the pattern together with the wool. Here you can see how it is meant to look when finished; mine will reach below the knees though.

And if that was not crazy enough I found this: Viking Boat Sweater.  This sweater is just craziness incarnate. Luckily I am still sane enough to not attempt to knit this sweater. But maybe a vest? With the ship motive just on the front and a simple herringbone pattern on the back… or the ship pattern there as well? With that pattern, purling back is out of the question – so, I have to steek? Yiiikes! Help! Thats something I’ve avoided until now. Oh well… you gotta stand up to your fears *rearranging priorities on the knitting list*.

Kurz vor der Sommersonnwende war ich wieder mal in Mainz – per ICE von Siegburg nach Mainz und wieder zurück. Quasi Zugsocking for One (V). Leider hat die Bahn wieder alles getan um ihrem schlechten Ruf gerecht zu werden, und so wurde aus etwas über 1 Stunde Fahrzeit hin  mal eben über das Doppelte aufgrund der Wartezeiten. Vielleicht sollte ich lobend erwähnen, dass zumindest die Rückfahrt relativ planmässig verlief – abgesehen davon, dass aufgrund von Verspätung des ICE (ach neeee) die Umsteigzeit in Frankfurt Flughafen verdammt kurz war.Das einzig tröstliche ist, dass ich mit dem Auto noch länger gebraucht hätte, selbst wenn ich ohne Stau rechne und wie wahrscheinlich ist das denn.

Also auf zum Tempel für Isis und Kybele/Magna Mater, das heute am fast alten Platz aus römischer Zeit liegt. 3 m zur Seite oder so, weil man sonst die Baupläne für das Einkaufszentrum Römerpassage hätte ändern oder auf das rekonstruierte Iseum hätte verzichten müssen.

Ansonsten befindet sich die  romano-keltischen Vergangenheit von Mogontiacum im Keller – wortwörtlich. Eigentlich wollte ich im Römisch-Germanischen-Zentralmuseum die 1 : 1 Replik des Gundestrupkessels mit Cernunnosdarstellung nochmal ansehen – aber der Kessel ist im Archiv. Zusammen mit ALLEM anderen aus dieser Zeit. Keltischer Wagen, Grabaustattung der Fürstin von Vix (ist die derzeit eigentlich als Mann oder als Frau klassifiziert, das wechselt ja gerne mal je nach neuester Untersuchung), die Bruchstücke der Jupiter-Gigantensäule, Grabstein von Menimane und Blussus, die ganzen restlichen Steine und sonstigen Funde… alles im Archiv verpackt, bis in – angeblich – 2 Jahren das neue Museum am Römerschiff-Museum erbaut und befüllt ist. Na, wenn der Zeitplan mal hinkommt…

Wie man vielleicht bemerkt – es fehlen Jupiter und der Gigant. Die wurden, weil aus Bronze und daher wertvoll, irgendwann eingeschmolzen. Ein komplettes Bild dieser typischen Verschmelzung von keltischer und römischer Mythologie gibts hier (ja, die Dinger waren BUNT). Und hier der krönende Abschluss en Detail.

Und das Wetter am 21.06.2010? Es war so feucht-kalt, dass ich nochmal Feuer im Kaminofen gemacht habe. Und dann prompt davor eingeschlafen bin. Zumindest die nächsten Tage sind jetzt endlich sommerliche Temperaturen angekündigt. Ich bin gespannt.

Shortly before Summer Solstice a made a short trip to Mainz and back by high speed train. A Knitting on the Train for One, so to say (V). Unfortunately, the German Railway Company did everything to live up to their bad reputation and so it took me over 2 h on the way there instead of a bit more than one. On the way back they almost managed to be on time, but the train was a bit late (what a surprise!) and changing time was really really short, but I made it. Some comfort is, that it would have taken me even longer by car anyway, even if there had been no traffic congestion at all and how realistic is that.

So I went to the showroom of the antique Iseum (Temple for the Goddesses Isis and Kybele during Roman times) which was discovered during building measures for a new shopping mall:

The rest of the cities romano-celtic past is in the basement – litereally. I wanted to have another look at the 1 : 1 replica of the  1 : 1  Gundestrup Cauldron including the famous picture of Cernunnos but the cauldron is down in the archives. Together with EVERYTHING from this time. Celtic wagon, grave inventar of the  Princess of Vix (is she momentary considered a  woman or a man? Seems to change with whatever is the latest work about her), the fragments of the Jupiter-Giant-Column, the grave stone of  Menimane and Blussus, all the rest of the stones and every find besides… everything packed off to the archives, until  – hopefully in 2 years time – the new museum will be opened beside the museum for the roman ships which were found a few years ago in the Rhine. Well, I’m really curious if they will be able to stick to that deadline…

As you may notice – Jupiter and Giant are missing. They were made of bronze and so got melted down somewhere along the centuries because of he material worth. A complete picture showing  this amalgamation of celtic and roman mythology you can find here (oh yes, these things were really multicolored). And here the crowning part en detail.

And the weather on the 21st of June in 2010? Well, it was so wet and cold, I started a fire in the wood stove. Only to fall asleep in front of it. At least for the next few days the weather forecast says, it will be warm, sunny and summery. I’m really curious.
