Einmal über den Weihnachtsmarkt geschlendert dieses Jahr und die Einkäufe waren typisch. Oder doch nicht?

Eine handgetöpferte grosse Tasse (ca. 400 ml) plus Untertasse:

Ein, in Zahlen, 1 (!) Knäuel Noro Silk Garden Sockengarn

(40% Lammwolle, 25% Nylon, 25% Seide, 10% Mohair):

Der Gag dabei? Ich kann immer noch nicht glauben, dass ich dieses Knäuel gekauft habe. Dieses eine Knäuel war fast exakt genauso teuer wie die handgetöpferte Tasse plus Untertasse. Yup. Hätte nie gedacht, dass ich jemals soviel für ein (!) Knäuel Sockenwolle zahlen würde. Meine Entschuldigung? Ich hatte vorher einen Glühwein und das Knäuel hat mich überraschend aus dem Regal angesprungen mit seiner subtil natürlichen Farbvariation. Widerstand zwecklos.

Allerdings war ich inzwischen auf der Noro Website und jetzt ist mir klar, wieso das Zeug so teuer ist. Die Wolle kommt von Falklandschafen (das wär ja noch keine Erklärung an sich) und wird mit einem sehr hohen Anteil an Handarbeit in Japan (und nicht in einem Billiglohnland) verarbeitet. Grasreste etc. werden garnschonend von Hand herausgezupft und nicht mit Chemikalien aufgelöst. Was dazu führt, dass gelegentlich noch ein paar Reste der Vegetation in der Wolle zu finden sind. Manche finden das extrem störend – mit der Begründung “Bei so einem teuren Garn will ich  nicht noch Reste von Was-auch-immer da drin finden”. Manche – wie ich – sehen das als Qualitätsmerkmal und Beweis für die Handarbeit (solange es in erträglichen Mengen bleibt). Und für  mich hat dieses Garn was von der japanischen Ästethik und Schönheit des Nicht-Perfekten (Wabi-Sabi).

Was ich jetzt aus der Wolle mache? Keine Ahnung. Momentan bin ich völlig zufrieden damit, das Knäuel gelegentlich zu streicheln und  die wunderschöne Textur zu spüren. Und wer weiss? Stash vermehrt sich ja öfters unerklärlicherweise (zumindest haben die meisten Strickerinnen mehr stash als sie je gekauft haben. Ganz bestimmt.) Vielleicht vermehrt sich dieses Knäuel ja auch – oder bräuchte man da mindestens zwei zum Anfang?

Und ist es Zufall, dass die Tasse und die Wolle die gleiche Farbe haben?

Took a stroll across the Christmas Market last weekend. The shopping was predictable. Or was it?

A large handmade cup (ca. 400 ml) including saucer.  And one, repeat 1 (!) skein Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn (40% Lambs Wool, 25% Nylon, 25% Silk, 10% Mohair).

The funny thing about it? I still cannot believe, I bought this skein. This one skein did cost me almost exactly as much as the handmade cup and saucer. Yup. I never would have believed I`d pay as much for just one (!) skein of sock wool. My excuse? I had one cup of mulled wine beforehand and the yarn sprang at me suddenly from the shelf. Resistance was futile.

Since then I visited the Noro Website and now I understand why this stuff is so expensive. The wool stems from Falkland sheep (that in itself would not suffice as explanation) and is processed in Japan (and not in a low wage country) with a large amount of handwork. Vegetable matter is picked by hand instead of being dissolved with chemicals, which means a lot less damage to the fiber. It also means, there can be traces of vegetable matter still remaining in the yarn. Some knitters find this extremely annoying because they expect to find no remaining traces of anything not-yarn-y, especially in such an expensive yarn. Others – like me – see it as proof of quality and processing by hand (as long as the amount is reasonable). And somehow this yarn reminds me of the Japanese aestethics  of wabi-sabi which celebrates the beauty of the imperfect.

What am I going to make with this wool? No idea yet. At the moment, I am completely content to pat the skein occasionally and feel the wonderful texture. And who knows? Stash tends to accumulate in inexplicable ways (at least, most knitters own far more stash than what they ever bought. No kidding.) Maybe this skein will also replicate itself – or do you need at least two for starters?

Just noticed the wool and the cup have the same color – coincidence?

Bin bei Tausendschön hängen geblieben, und die Wolle ist in real einfach noch viel schöner als, ja, als 1.000 schön.

Sockenwolle in Zitronengelb und in Pink, eine Mini-Häkelnadel zum retten heruntergefallener Maschen auf dem Pink (so einfach wie genial – warum wird sowas nicht bei uns erfunden sondern in USA?!) und einmal Mini Mochi “Intense Rainbow” von Crystal Palace Yarn. Das Blaue und Grüne versteckt sich innen:

Thats what you get for nosing around in the internet wool shops. The first picture shows what I got from Tausendschön (translates as 1.000 times beautiful) and the yarn is just that.

What have I got? One skein of sock yarn in lemon and pink, a mini chrochet hook to save wayward stitches (this is as simple as it is ingenious – why is it that such things are invented in the USA and not here?!) and one Mini Mochi “Intense Rainbow” from Crystal Palace Yarn. The blue and green is hiding inside.

And I wanted to stick to knitting from stash. Ha ha.

Nach jahrelanger Lagerzeit in meinem Wollvorrat ist aus dieser Wolle noch was geworden, nämlich mein Druidinnen Cape mit Rocailles drauf, die an Tautropfen erinnern. Ich deklariere das jetzt mal als fertig, weil ich es so tragen kann und derzeit keine Lust mehr habe daran zu stricken. Irgendwann werde ich noch eine Kante untenrum anstricken und wahrscheinlich auch vorne, damit man es besser schliessen kann oder Knöpfe anbringen. Wolle ist noch genug da, da das ja Wolldiät aus dem Stash war. Warum Druidinnen Cape? Es ist eine schöne Mischung aus Olivtönen, das reicht mir als Grund. Ohne weitere Worte nun  die Bilder:

After hibernating several years in my stash, this yarn finally found it’s destination, so proudly presenting:  The Dewdrop Druidess Cape. The rocailles remind me a bit of dewdrops. I declare this piece as finished for now, because it is wearable and I am sick of knitting on it at the moment.  Sometime I will add a lace border along the lower edge and probably along the front edges, maybe buttons, to make closing easier. I’ve got enough wool left over, as this was a  knit from stash project. Why Druidess Cape? The wool is a nice blend of olive-green colors, that’s enough for me. Normalerweise bin ich ziemlich diszipliniert, wenn es um Wolle kaufen geht. Das Mantra: “Du hast genug Wolle, Du hast genug Wolle, Du hast…” funktioniert normalerweise ausreichend um mich von “Ich-habe-keine-Ahnung-wofür-aber-ich-muss-das-hier-haben” Käufen abzuhalten.

Ausser bei Glitzer und Bling. Da setzt es aus.

Also – gestern gekauft bei Maschenkunst in Köln:

Regia X-Mas Sockengarn mit Lurex-Glitzer in Schwarz, Creme und Weiss – Blau und Grün hatte ich schon, Rot ist nicht meine Farbe aber zur Vollständigkeit halber sollte ich sie vielleicht doch kaufen… Könnte eine nette Mütze im Nikolaus-Stil werden.

Immerhin war ich vorher knapp 130 gr Wollmeise los geworden und das 4. Knäuel in Admiral ombre braun war ein gezielter Kauf  für ein bestimmtes Paar Socken.  Das zähl ich jetzt nicht mit. Somit Stash + 170 gr. Naja. Geht ja noch.

Oh oh…

Normally I am rather disciplined when buying wool. The Mantra: “You’ve got enough yarn, You’ve got enough yarn, You’ve got…” usually works well enough to keep me from “I-don’t-have-the-foggiest-idea-what-for-but-I-got-to-have-this” buys.

Except it’s about glitter and bling. That’s when I get completely helpless.

So – up there is the picture what I bought yesterday at Maschenkunst in Cologne.

Regia X-Mas Sock Yarn with glitter in Black, Creme and White. Blue and Green are already in my stash, only Red is missing, which is not my color anyway. Just to be complete, maybe I should buy it anyway. Could make a nice Santa Cap.

At least I destashed 130 gr of Wollmeise yesterday. The the  4th skein I bought was Schoppel Admiral ombre brown with  a specific pair of socks already in mind. So I am not counting this skein towards the stash.  So, stash  increase  170 gr. Well. That’s acceptable.

Am Wochenende in Sinzig auf dem Barbarossa Markt gekauft:

1,50 x 1,50 m Wollstoff in einem wunderbaren Himmel-Indigo-Blau

Kuschelig und ansonsten einfach ohne Worte schön

Der Markt war übrigens nett wie immer, allerdings etwas weniger Stände als die letzten Jahre. Ob die Mittelaltermarktszene ihren Höhepunkt überschritten hat?

Last weekend we visited the yearly medieval fair in Sinzig, known as Barbarossa Markt. Nice as always, but a few booths less than during the last years.Wonder, if the medieval fair craze has somehow reached peak point.  I bought some fine wool cloth sized 1.5 x 1.5 m (1.64 x 1.64 yards)  in the most beautiful sky-indigo-blue. It is very soft and words just fail me to describe it.
