Auch wenn heute die Sonne scheint, das usselige Novemberwetter wird uns noch früh genug heimsuchen. Um ein wenig gegenzuhalten und die Augen und das Gemüt zu erfreuen statt sich von trüben Novembertagen und langen Nächten herunterziehen zu lassen, hab ich mir ein rot-goldenes Leuchten in Meritence  vom Regenbogenschaf geordert. Tadaaa: Meritence Lace, handgefärbt, Farbe Liebelei auf Merino und Tencelfaser, die aus Holz gemacht wird. Wolle muss für mich ja bekanntermassen nicht super-soft sein – aber die hier ist wirklich kuschelweich, schad auch  nix

Das Schaf hat den Umschlag sogar persönlich vorbeigebracht und ist auch gleich geblieben:

Today the sun is shining but the drab November weather is sure to get here soon. To counter the depressing effects this usually has on me, I ordered some Meritence from the Regenbogenschaf (The Rainbow Sheep). Meritence Lace in “Flirtatiousness” to be exact in a red-golden glow to shine in bleak November days and long nights. Meritence is a mix of Merino Wool and Tencel, which is made from wood pulp. And even if wool does not have to be super-soft to be to my liking, this yarn is oh-so-cuddly-soft which is not detrimental  at all 

The sheep delivered the yarn personally and staid as you can see from the second picture.

Ja. Genau DAS Thema. Noch ist Zeit, die Kiddies vom PC weg zu schicken. Andererseits hat ein bisschen Biologieunterricht auch noch nie geschadet.

Gestern, am ersten wirklichen Sonnentag dieses Frühlings im Wintergarten gesichtet:

Bienen-Flugstunden:

Dass sich die Löcher eines gewissen Regalsystems von einem gewissen schwedischen Möbelhaus offenbar perfekt als Nisthöhlen für Wildbienen eigenen, wissen wir schon seit 2 Jahren., seit das erste dieser Regale im Wintergarten steht. Sieht man an den schon zugekleisterten Löchern auf dem Bild. Und dann sind sie noch in den Tisch gegangen, und ins Schlüsselloch…

Es sind jede Menge davon da, offenbar handelt es sich um Mauerbienen, die als Nützlinge gerne bei uns bleiben dürfen. Man fühlt sich zwar ein bisschen wie in einem Bienenstock (was eigentlich Unsinn ist, da Mauerbienen zu den Solitärbienen gehören) wenn es um einen herum so summt, aber da sie teilweise nicht mal einen Stachel haben und selbst die mit Stachel nicht durch die menschliche Haut kommen, teile ich den Wintergarten gerne mit ihnen. Es steht jetzt noch ein Regal dort, das war übrig . Mehr Nistplätze .

Und dann noch das:

Bienen beim S*e*x.

Mitten in unserem Wintergarten. Hätte nie gedacht, dass ich sowas mal sehen würde, aber so ist Natur halt.

Und das war beileibe nicht das einzige Paar. Ich hab mindestens 3 Paar gleichzeitig gezählt. Meine Güte. Um die Bestäubung unserer Pflaumenbäume brauchen wir uns wohl keine Gedanken machen.

Das waren jetzt die Bienen – was ist mit den Blüten? Ich gebe zu, ich konnte der Formulierung nicht widerstehen und Blüten habe ich im Garten eher noch nicht anzubieten. Dafür sind wir hier auf dem Hügel wohl zu wind-exponiert und den geschützten Lagen ein bis zwei Wochen hinterher. Dafür  ein Bild der Aade Löng Wolle, die ich vor kurzem bei Lanafina gekauft habe. Diese Farbkombination hat zwar  im Shop keinen Namen (und ist wohl derzeit ausverkauft), ich habe sie für mich aber Blütenpink getauft.

Yep. THAT topic. Still enough time left to send the kiddies away from the PC but then, a bit of biology lesson never hurt anyone. Seen yesterday, on the first real sunny day of spring in the winter garden – lots of bees.

The holes of a certain storage rack from a certain Sweden-based furniture store seem to be perfect nesting holes for wild bees. We discovered this about two years ago when the storage rack was first placed in the winter garden and ir you look closely you can see the already filled in holes from the previous years. And then they discovered the table and the keyhole as nesting places…

There are really a lot of them and they seem to be Solitary Bees which are very useful animals for pollinating a lot of plants, so they are welcome to stay. It feels a bit like sitting in a bee hive with all that humming around you (which incidentally is nonsense, as they are solitary bees) but as they have either no sting or the ones that have are not strong enough to pierce human skin I think it is quite funny with them around. There is now one more storing rack, that was left over to provide more nesting space.

And then I stumbled across bees having s*e*x. Right on the floor of my winter garden. Never thought of seeing THAT. Well, that`s nature for you. Also, this was not the only pair I encountered. I counted at least three pairs at the same time. OMGs. Seems we will not have to worry about the pollination of our plum trees.

So much about the bees – what about the blossoms? I admit, I could not resist the play on words, even if I cannot offer much in the garden in the way of blossoms right now. Obviously we are a bit too much exposed to the wind here on the hillside so we lag behind a week of two against more protected places.

So I offer a picture of the wool I bought a few days ago at Lanafina.  This special color mix has no specific name in the shop (and it seems, this one is out of stock), but I named it Blossom Pink in my book.

Nee, nix Qualm sondern Handarbeit.

Nachdem ich dieses Wolle-Hanf-Garn gefunden hatte war ich echt neugierig und habe ein Probestück bestellt.

Doppelt genommen:

Kam heute an und wurde sofort mit etwas grüner Lebensmittelfarbe und einem Hauch von Essigessenz in den Topf verfrachtet und aufgekocht.

Hier nach dem Färben 3-fach genommen.

Nach dem Färbebad ist es hübsch aufgeflufft und hat die Farbe schön angenommen – o.k. es ist jetzt nicht wirklich das Super-Schmuse-Garn aber weder lebe ich auf einem Ponyhof, noch habe ich Interesse daran. Ich habe mir jetzt 1 kg (1 Verpackungseinheit) bestellt. 1 kg für 12 Euro – was soll man da sagen. Das Garn könnte ich mir verstrickt in jeder Fadenzahl vorstellen – von Lace bis dick, wobei ich persönlich alles ab Nadelstärke 5,0 eh nicht mehr mag.

3-fach genommen sollte es ziemlich genau hinkommen um die Unmentionables aus der Summer Knitty 2007 zu stricken und zwirnen kann ich die Wolle auf dem Spinnrad. Die Lauflänge kommt dann fast exakt hin und mit 50 % Hanf und 50 % Wolle statt 80 % Baumwolle und 20 % Merino ist der Materialmix auch nah dran.

Die Anleitung ist zwar auf englisch, aber allein die Bilder lohnen sich  – handgestrickte, knielange Damenunterhosen, inspiriert von Vorbildern um 1905 sieht man nicht alle Tage. Wenn man bedenkt, dass die Moralisten im 1. Jhd. Schaum vor dem Mund bekamen beim Gedanken, dass Frauen es wagten, diese Dinger ausser Sichtweiter der Öffentlichkeit UNTER ihrer sonstigen Kleidung trugen…. weia. Heissen wohl nicht umsonst auf englisch die “Unaussprechlichen”.

Nada, no smoke but fiber craft.

After I found this Wool-Hemp-Yarn I was really curious and ordered a sample which arrived today, only to be cooked at once with some green food coloring and a wee bit of vinegar. The pictured yarn scrap is a 3-ply.

After the dye bath it took the color quite beautifully and bloomed as well. It is not really a super-duper-soft yarn but I am not after those anyway. I like it and ordered 1 kg (one packing unit). At 12 Euros for the kg (equals 16.18 USD/10.09 British Pounds) at the moment it is really a bargain. This yarn should look nice in every ply – from lace to bulky even if I personally prefer Aran as maximum thickness.

As a 3-ply it should be just sufficient to knit the Unmentionables from Summer Knitty 2007. I can ply it on my spinning wheel to get almost the exact yardage of the original yarn. The mix of animal and plant materials is also close with 50 % hemp and 50 % wool instead of 80 % cotton and 20 % Merino.

Have look at them – just the pictures alone are worth it. Hand knitted knee-length women underwear based on models form around 1905 are not an everyday sight. And now think about the fact that moralists in the 19th century were frothing that women dared to wear them out of sight BENEATH their skirts… they are not called unmentionables for nothing, I suppose.

Handgeschmiedete Stricknadeln in Bronze, Silber oder Gold. Unglaublich. Hier bei Celtic Swan in USA erhältlich. Im übrigen auch Stopfnadeln und Fibeln/Broschen etc. für diejenigen, die lieber nicht mit Nadelspiel stricken und deswegen keine Verwendung dafür haben.

Ich hab mir dann welche in Bronze geleistet und es strickt sich wirklich unglaublich gut damit. Das Metall erwärmt sich in Nullkommanix auf Handtemperatur. Aber ich steh ja auch auf Metall-Nadeln. Und in den dünnen Sockenstärken fällt das höhere Gewicht ggü. Alu oder Holz auch nicht wirklich auf.

Und damit die Nadeln – wenn nicht in Gebrauch – auch einen schönen Platz zum drin Wohnen haben, noch schnell diesen Monat ein Projekt eingeschoben, damit im Januar auf der Strickprojektseite auch was zum Zeigen da ist.: die sea, sand & sky Nadelrolle zur Aufbewahrung von dpns, wie Strumpfstricknadeln im neudeutsch der Strickerinnen heissen (spricht sich doch viel flüssiger aus als Strumpfstricknadelspiel oder auch double pointed needles). Der Name kommt übrigens von den verwendeten Farben – Meerblau, Sand und Himmelblau.

Und: Wolldiät – gestrickt mit Lopi aus dem Wollvorrat , gefilzt bei 40 C in der Waschmaschine, geschrumpft 7 – 11 %

Handmade knitting needles in bronze, silver or gold. Unbelievable. You can obtain them here at Celtic Swan in USA. For those who do not like using dpns and have therefore no use of those, you can get needles and shawl brooches there as well.

I treated myself to some in bronze and they are really fine to work with. The metal warms up to the temperature of your hands in no time! But I am a fan of metal dpns anyway and in the small sock sizes the higher weight in comparison to wood or aluminium needles is not really noticable.

I wanted some nice place for the needles to be stored when they are not in use. So I whipped up this project which has the additional advantage that something will be visible on the January part of my show off knitting page.  My sea, sand & sky Needle Case Roll to store dpns. The name stems from the colors used: sea blue, sandy off white and sky blue.

The pictures are as wip; finished, fulled and filled; rolled up and from the side – some eye candy IMO. And: this was knitting from stash with some Lopi already lingering there. Felted at 40 C / 104 F in the washing machine, shrinkage was about 7 – 11 %.
