Da hustet ein Vulkan in Island und von Nordskandinavien bis nach Österreich werden die Flugzeuge auf den Boden geholt – welch eine Erinnerung, dass Mutter Natur gar nicht so allgütig ist, wie Sie gerne in manchen Kreisen und Filmen wie z.B. vor kurzem in Avatar dargestellt wird. Mutter Natur interessiert sich nicht gross für uns, was uns aber noch lange nicht das Recht gibt, unseren Müll überallhin zu kippen. Die Sache mit den Feinstaubplaketten ist allerdings jetzt auch eher witzig, na, sei’s drum.

Möglicherweise ist das alles jetzt aber auch nur ein Vorspiel zu einem viel grösseren Feuerwerk.

Der Katla ist der angrenzende Vulkan und auch hier ist möglicherweise der nächste Ausbruch fällig, nur dann in erheblich grösserem Massstab als alles, was uns der Eyjafjallajokull in den letzten Wochen geliefert hat. Ob sich da gerade was tut, sollte man hier sehen können:

A vulcano in Iceland is coughing and from northern skandinavia down to Austria the airplanes are going to ground. Nice reminder that Mother Nature is not all caring as some people and films like Avatar are trying to make us believe. Mother Nature does not give a crap about us. Which is no excuse to deposit our trash everywhere.

The first three links above are to the vulcano that’s active at the moment. Maybe all this is just the prelude to much bigger fireworks.

Katla is a vulcano close by and maybe here the next eruption is just about to happen. If so, then it will probably dwarf everything we have seen in the past few weeks. The last link above should show if there is anything going on at the moment.

Immerhin hat es die letzten Tage etwas getaut. Die nächsten Tage soll es wieder kälter werden (aber immerhin nicht schneien).

Die ***** Meeresrauschen CD ist aber immer noch nicht aufgetaucht. Vielleicht hätte ich intensiver suchen sollen.

During the last few days some snow thawed. The next days it´s supposed to freeze again but  at least no snow is predicted.

The *****  CD with the surf sounds still didn´t turn up. Maybe I should have searched for it more thoroughly.

To counter the winter depression a bit, above some reminders that there will be better (warmer) times ahead.

Gestern war ich etwas früher aus dem Büro raus und habe es geschafft, noch kurz beim Bauernhof einzukaufen – u.a.  ein Dutzend Klaräpfel

Naja, ein Dutzend abzüglich der bereits ihrem bestimmungsgemässen Ende anheimgefallenen Exemplare

Das ist zumindest mal ein APFEL, mehlig-säuerlich, nicht so eine süsslich weichgezüchtete fade Neu-Sorte. Alte Sorte, schlecht lagerfähig und extrem druckempfindlich, deswegen gibts diese Sorte nur so ca. 3 Wochen im Jahr von Ende Juli bis Mitte August. Und auch nicht im Supermarkt, sondern nur im Hofladen oder auf dem Wochenmarkt. Na, jetzt weiss ich ja zumindest, wo ich dieses und die nächsten Jahre meinen Nachschub herbekomme. Über den Preis wollen wir mal nicht reden – direkt vom Bauern und dann  noch eine wenig nachgefragte Sorte – allmählich kann ich die Klagen der Landwirte über die allzu niedrigen Erzeugerpreise im Verhältnis zum Arbeitsaufwand verstehen.

Und wer auch in Zukunft preiswerte Lebensmittel aus der Region haben möchte, kauft am besten im lokalen Hofladen, wenn möglich. Wenn Ihr keinen in der Nähe habt, Pech.  (Und ich lass mich jetzt lieber nicht über den knackigen Mega-grossen Blumenkohl für 1,00 EUR aus, der mit den Klaräpfeln mitging).

Ich glaub, ich geh gleich noch einen Apfel essen…

Edit 02.08.2009: Da hatte ich wohl ausgeprochenes Glück, dass ich gerade in diesem Tag dort war – gestern wollte ich mir nochmal ein paar Klaräpfel holen – alles verkauft. Das sind dann wohl die einzige Klaräpfel, die es dieses Jahr für mich geben wird… Nachdenken über ein Klarapfelbäumchen im Garten

Edit 06.08.2009: Doch nochmal im Bioladen ein paar Klaräpfel erwischt. Die waren auch lecker aber nicht so vollmundig wie die anderen. Scheint, es gibt keine Alternative zum Bäumchen im Garten.

Yesterday  I left the office a bit earlier than usual and so I was in time to hop in at the local farmers shop – and I got a dozen Klaräpfel, which is an old variety. Oh well, that´s not a dozen on the picture any more, I know – some apples already met their intended end.

This variety is an old one – and it´s an APPLE – not one of these modern sweetish mellow wishy-washy sorts. The disadvantage is, this apple has a very short shelf live and is very susceptible to pressure. So you can get this apple only for about three weeks in the last week of July and the first half of August. And not at the supermarkt either but only at a farmers shop or market. Anyway, now I know where I can get them this year and the next. What I paid for these apples – let´s not talk about it. Directly from the farmer and a variety which is not much in demand… By and by I can understand the farmes lamenting about the low producer prices in relation to the amount of work they put in.

So if you want to have good value for your money now and in the future, buy at your local farmer´s shop – if possible, of course. If you have not got one in the vicinity, too bad for you. (And I won´t talk about the firm and large cauliflower for less than one and a half dollars / clearly less than one British Pound that went with the apples.)

I think, I´ll eat another apple right now…

Edit 02.08.2009: Seems I was extremely lucky shopping there just on this day. Yesterday I went there again to get some more of these apples – all sold out. Looks as these are the only Klarapples I will get this year… thinking about a small Klarapple Tree in the garden

Edit 06.08.2009: In the organic store I found some more Klarapples. They were also tasty but not as much as the other ones. Seems a little tree in the garden is a must.

Bottle Green verwendet Zucker, Quellwasser, Holunderblüten (natürlich!) und Zitronensäure. Kein Süssstoff, keine Farbstoffe und keine naturidentische oder künstliche Aromen. Ein bisschen Schwefeldioxid als Konservierungsmittel – damit hält die geöffnete Flasche bis zu einem Monat, sofern sie kühl steht. Nicht, dass das bei mir relevant wäre – so wie ich dieses himmlische Zeug trinke, hält eine Flasche bei mir gerade mal eine Woche  .

Bei der vorgeschlagenen Verdünnung von 1 : 10 enthalten 100 ml fertiges Getränk 112 kj / 26 kcal.

Ich nehm meistens etwas weniger Sirup als vorgeschlagen. Und eisgekühlt ist das einfach nur suuuuper lecker – ein Traum von Sommer im Glas

As you like, here are the product details and where to get the stuff:

Bottle Green uses sugar, spring water, elderflowers (of course) and citric acid. No artificial sweeteners, no colours, no artificial flavours. Ab bit of sulphur dioxide, so the content of the bottle will keep 1 month after opening if kept cool. Not that this should be an issue with me – at the rate, I drink this heavenly stuff, a bottle won´t keep longer than a week at most .

The producer recommends to dilute 1 part syrup with 10 parts water. When used this way, 100 ml of cordial will contain 112 kj / 26 kcal.

I usually take less syrup. Add some ice cubes and it´s simply delicious – a dream of summer in a glass
