Da hustet ein Vulkan in Island und von Nordskandinavien bis nach Österreich werden die Flugzeuge auf den Boden geholt – welch eine Erinnerung, dass Mutter Natur gar nicht so allgütig ist, wie Sie gerne in manchen Kreisen und Filmen wie z.B. vor kurzem in Avatar dargestellt wird. Mutter Natur interessiert sich nicht gross für uns, was uns aber noch lange nicht das Recht gibt, unseren Müll überallhin zu kippen. Die Sache mit den Feinstaubplaketten ist allerdings jetzt auch eher witzig, na, sei’s drum.

Möglicherweise ist das alles jetzt aber auch nur ein Vorspiel zu einem viel grösseren Feuerwerk.

Der Katla ist der angrenzende Vulkan und auch hier ist möglicherweise der nächste Ausbruch fällig, nur dann in erheblich grösserem Massstab als alles, was uns der Eyjafjallajokull in den letzten Wochen geliefert hat. Ob sich da gerade was tut, sollte man hier sehen können:

A vulcano in Iceland is coughing and from northern skandinavia down to Austria the airplanes are going to ground. Nice reminder that Mother Nature is not all caring as some people and films like Avatar are trying to make us believe. Mother Nature does not give a crap about us. Which is no excuse to deposit our trash everywhere.

The first three links above are to the vulcano that’s active at the moment. Maybe all this is just the prelude to much bigger fireworks.

Katla is a vulcano close by and maybe here the next eruption is just about to happen. If so, then it will probably dwarf everything we have seen in the past few weeks. The last link above should show if there is anything going on at the moment.

Ein paar Worte über den Film Agora über die Philosophin Hypatia von Alexandria. Ziemlich gut, und vor allem historisch akkurat aber kein Renner an den Kinokassen. Kein Wunder – weder genug Sex noch Crime, spritzendes Blut, Kämpfe, Spezialeffekte oder Romantik… Der Film hatte eine fast perfekte Atmosphäre für das damalige Alexandria – der Tempel, die Bibliothek, die Strassen, die Menschen… gutes Studio und ein beträchtlicher Teil des Budgets ging offensichtlich ins Budget für Kleidung und Ausstattung.

Ausserdem war der Film überraschend dicht an den wenigen bekannten Fakten über Hypatias Leben dran. Sie lebte an der Wende vom 3. zum 4. Jahrhundert, war Philosophin, Mathematikerin, Astronomin und ganz offensichtlich brilliant, sogar nach den alexandrinischen Maßstäben. Und die waren ziemlich hoch, da die Stadt und ihre Universität als Zentrum des Wissens der damaligen Welt bekannt waren. Es scheint, dass sie bewusst unverheiratet blieb um eine berufliche Karriere als Lehrerin an der Universität zu verfolgen. Sie hätte sicherlich eine gute Partie abgegeben und wenn sie eine Ehe gewollt hätte, wie das dort und damals die übliche Lebensplanung für Frauen war, hätte dem wohl nichts im Weg gestanden.

Meiner Meinung nach zeichnet der Film ein gutes Porträt einer brillianten Frau, die Vernunft, Wissen, unabhängiges Denken sowie die Freude am Lernen und Neugier auf das Universum und alles darin zu schätzen wusste. Die Darstellung der politischen Situation in Alexandria ist ebenfalls gelungen – der Aufstieg der Christen, die Existenz bigotter Fanatiker ebenso wie Gläubiger, die es gut meinten, die immer kleiner werdend Gruppe der Heiden und die Kämpfe zwischen diesen Fraktionen. Und wie skrupellose und machthungrige Individuen erfolgreich den Pöbel für ihre Zwecke manipulierten. Die Hauptcharakter neben Hypatia (ihr Vater, der römische Präfekt, der Bischof etc.) scheinen auch alle sehr dicht an den historisch bekannten Fakten zu sein.

Hypatia wurde im März 415 A.D. von einem fanatischen christlichen Mob ermordet.

Es sollte Jahrhunderte dauern, bis wieder einzelne Frauen auch nur annähernd ähnliche Positionen in Lehre und Wissenschaft erreichen konnten. Und es dauerte fast 1.500 Jahre, bis Galileo Galilei wieder über das heliozentrische Weltbild publizierte – nur um von der Kirche als Ketzer verfolgt zu werden.

Nicht nur die Bibliothek von Alexandria ist damals in Flammen aufgegangen, auch das Wissen und die Vernunft der Antike.

Some remarks about the film Agora about the female philospher Hypatia from Alexandria. It was quite good, but understandably no hit at the box office – not enough of either sex, crime, blood, fighting, special effects, romance… Concerning the atmosphere created in the film, it was near perfect für Alexandria at that time – the temple, the library, the streets, the people there… they had a good studio environment and obviously a good part of the budged went into clothes and equipment.

Also, it clung suprisingly close to the few known historical facts about Hypatia from Alexandria (today Egypt, then a part of the Roman Empire). She lived at the turn from the 3rd to the 4th century, was a philosopher, mathematician and astronomer and obviously brilliant, even by Alexandrinian standards. And those were pretty high as the city and the university there were famed for their learning. It seems, she stayed unmarried by choice to pursue a professional career as a teacher at the university. Judging from her social background she probably could have made a good match if she had wanted to and was the usual norm for women then and there.

In my opinion, the film draws a good portrait of a brilliant woman who values reason, learning, thinking and the joy of learning and curiosity about the universe and everything in it. It also paints realistically the political situation in Alexandria at that time – the rise of the Christians, the existence of bigott fanatics alongside well meaning believers, the remaining pagans and the clashes between that fractions. And how unscrupulous fanatics and manipulative power hungry individuals suceeded in turning the masses their way. The main characters beside Hypatia (her father, the Roman Prefect, the Bishop etc.) seem to have been modelled closely on what is known about the actual people as well.

Hypatia was murdered in March 415 A.D. by a fanatical Christian mob.

It took centuries for women to acchive like positions again – teachers, scientists etc. And it took nearly 1.500 years until Galileo Galilei published again a book about the heliocentric system – only to be pursued as a heretic by the church.

Not only the great library of Alexandria went up in flames back then but also the knowledge and reason of  the ancient world.
